Lindegren, Erik
(1910-1968)
   A Swedish modernist poet, Lindegren studied philosophy at the University of Stockholm and had his debut with a volume of rather ordinary poems, Posthum ungdom (1935; Posthumous Youth). His most important collection is Mannen utan väg (1942; tr. The Man without a Way, 1969), in which he avoided the use of capital letters and punctuation. It contains 40 poems that consist of 14 lines each, and these fragmented sonnets give the impression of a disintegrated world. The meaning of the texts is also difficult to grasp, which is consistent with Lindegren's ides that truth and meaning are unattainable. The next collection, Sviter (1947; Suites), was more accessible. It was followed by Vinteroffer (1954; Winter Sacrifice).
